Skip hire help

Delivery & collection

If you really need a skip tomorrow, we will do our best to find you something that meets your requirements. However, our strong recommendation is that you book your skip at least a few days in advance, that way we can be sure to get to you what you need at a time that's convenient.

We operate six days every week, Monday to Saturday, except for public holidays. Our opening hours are from 7am to 6pm Monday to Friday and 7am to 12 noon on Saturday.

The skip booking process will ask you to nominate a day for delivery and collection and whether that should be am or pm.

Prices

Our pricing is totally transparent. Just like when you buy something in a shop, our prices include VAT. The price quoted to you is the full cost of the service, no add-ons, no credit card charges.

To provide you with a quote, our booking process will ask you to select a skip size, a location for delivery, and dates for delivery and collection. The price we quote is for a skip of an agreed size, delivered to and collected from your post code. Our standard collection is seven business days after delivery. You can keep the skip for longer for an additional daily charge.

If you like the quote, then you can book and pay for your skip there and then.

Skip hire FAQs

Which skip size do I need?

You should select a skip size that meets your needs using the skip hire size description. See our handy skip sizing guide to help you choose. Remember you can only fill the skip to its top edge.

Please note we are not legally permitted to transport skips that are overfilled.

Do I need a permit to hire a skip?

You will only need a permit if the skip is to be left on public land (typically a road or path), so you will not need a permit if the skip is delivered to your driveway or any part of your property. If the skip is to be left on public land, we will arrange all of the permits for you. As you move through the booking process, you will be asked to confirm if you need a permit.

Please answer YES if you plan to leave the skip on public land. Permits are issued by your local authority and cost £110 for skip sizes up to 10 yards, and £300 for 12 and 14 yard skips.

Once you have a skip permit, it lasts for 28 days and can cover multiple delivery and collections to the same location.

Do I need to be there for the delivery?

We recommend that you provide specific delivery directions (e.g. "please leave the skip on my driveway") when you book the skip. Please make sure that the place you want the skip to be left has good access for a lorry.

Otherwise, you or your builder/contractor will need to be there for the delivery to agree the drop-off spot with the driver when he arrives with the skip. To help reduce any inconvenience, we will provide you with a delivery time slot the day before your skip is scheduled to arrive.

Please contact us if access is poor and may require a smaller lorry.

Do I need to be there for a collection?

You do not need to be there when the skip is collected. However, please ensure that there is good access for the lorry to collect the skip.

If there is insufficient room or poor access, we may not be able to collect the skip and you will incur additional costs for a further collection and extra hire days. Please see our terms & conditions for further details.

Do I need to advise my neighbours?

As a matter of courtesy, it would be polite to notify your neighbours, particularly if the skip is to be left on the road. However, you are under no obligation to do so.

Can my builder arrange my skip hire?

Yes, your builder can arrange this for you. The process is exactly the same as if you were to book the skip yourself.

Can I extend my skip hire period if needed?

When you book your skip, you specify the delivery and collection dates. If you need to extend the collection date, this can be arranged for an additional daily charge. Please call the office on 01449 613824 with your skip booking reference to rearrange your collection day.

What waste can't I put in the skip?

Our skip hire and pricing are only for the disposal of general garden and building waste.

The following items are prohibited and should not be placed in our skips mixed with your general garden or building waste: fridges/freezers, tyres, paint cans, TVs/ monitors, asbestos, clinical/medical waste, florescent tubes, solvents, liquids, oil, batteries, plastic board, hazardous/toxic material, gas cylinders, upholstered seating (sofas, chairs, etc.), and grade D wood (hazardous and potentially hazardous).

If you want to hire our skips to dispose of specific waste items which are on our prohibited list, this can be arranged by calling our office on 01449 613 824. The prices offered will reflect the additional cost of managing that specific type of waste, and while higher than our general waste charges, will be significantly less than the price you will pay if you mix prohibited items with general waste.

If we receive prohibited items mixed with general garden and building waste on the return of the skip, you will be charged an additional fee, which will exceed the price paid for pre-arranged disposal.

Please call our office on 01449 613 824 if you have any queries on acceptable waste types.

Can I put POPs waste in a skip?

From 1st January 2023, SunSkips cannot accept upholstered seating in any of our skips following new legislation from the Environment Agency.

This includes, but isn’t limited to, sofas, sofa beds, armchairs, kitchen and dining room chairs, stools and foot stools, home office chairs, futons, beanbags, and cushions.

Deckchairs, mattresses, curtains, blinds, beds and wooden or plastic seats without upholstery are still OK to put in skips.

The textiles and foam contained in upholstered seating falls under the category of Persistent Organic Pollutants (POPs), meaning they're harmful to people and the environment if sent to landfill.

Upholstered furniture should be taken to a Household Waste Recycling Centre (HWRC) so the local authority can send it for incineration, or you can give us a call to arrange a special collection.

What is the new 2023 hazardous waste wood legislation?
As of September 1, 2023, it is against the law to attempt to recycle wood that falls under the following categories of wooden building materials used on houses before 2007, unless it has been proven safe via testing: Barge boards, external fascia, soffit boards, external joinery (used in wooden windows and conservatories, for example), external doors, roof timber, tiling cladding, tiling battens, timber frames, and timber joists. Get in touch with SunSkips to discuss how we can help you with the disposal of this wood type.
Can I choose the colour of my skip?

All our skips are sunny orange or yellow .

Is my waste recycled?

Not everything we receive from you can be recycled - after all, it is waste.

However, all of the materials we receive are sorted. We separate it into material which can be reused, such as metals, green waste, wood, paper/cardboard, plastics, glass, rubble. After the sorting process is complete, there is a relatively small residue which we send for disposal at a licensed disposal site. Through this process, we maximise the amount of material reused and minimise the amount of waste.

Waste management services

SunSkips offers a range of skip sizes for commercial grade applications. These are typically 14-yard, 20-yard and 40-yard skips. We are happy to offer commercial customers our smaller skips if these are more relevant to your needs. Indeed, we encourage you to take a smaller skip for a short period rather than sitting on a larger skip for longer. We promise to turn these around to your time needs so you will never be without a skip.

For our trade account customers, we offer payment terms and encourage single waste streams. Pre-sort your waste into single streams and are happy to offer you a discount on our hire rates, which will be adjusted for the weight of material and single stream of waste that you want to send us. So if you want to send us a 20-yard unit filled with just cardboard, this will attract a different and lower price to one filled with mixed builders' waste.
