In its 2024 annual report, AI waste intelligence firm Greyparrot shared insights from 140 of its Greyparrot Analyzer units installed across 55 facilities in over 20 countries. These smart units monitored more than 40 billion waste objects – about 1,200 every second.
That volume of AI-powered recycling data uncovered some uncomfortable truths. While we’ve made real progress in recycling, far too much recyclable material still ends up out of the loop. This isn’t just a blow to sustainability efforts; it also represents millions in lost revenue.

Take GreyParrot’s client GreenTech, for example. The plastic recycling company processes over 150,000 tonnes of PET plastic every year.
Using Greyparrot’s technology, they’ve fine-tuned their operations to maintain quality and maximise yield – a major environmental payoff considering recycled PET (polyethylene terephthalate) emits 79% less carbon than its virgin counterpart.
GreenTech’s CTO, Alan Smith, said, “The data that we get from Analyzer is really detailed. That’s going to impact sorting and how we change our infeed ‘recipes’.
“The technology will add long-term value as we feed back to our suppliers on quality, but the key benefit is that this will drive better yield. That’s a core performance metric rather than a nice-to-have.”

What AI is learning (and where we’re falling short)
The data from AI recycling technology is revealing.
Some materials are sorted well, like plastic bottles, aluminium cans, and glass. But others aren’t making the cut. Too many recyclables still end up in residue waste.
For example, while 10.9 billion paper and card items were correctly recycled, fibre materials still made up 56% of all residue waste. That’s a big miss, especially when you consider that every tonne of paper diverted from landfill saves roughly a tonne of CO₂.

Recyclable plastics made up another 18% of what slipped through the net in just one year. Greyparrot’s units detected over 6 billion PET bottles – the single largest waste stream by volume. But they also found that more than 35,000 tonnes of recyclable plastic ended up in residue.
That’s partly because many plastics are hard to identify and often get misclassified. Once a recycling stream is contaminated, the whole batch can be downgraded or rejected, resulting in an estimated 52,500 tonnes of avoidable carbon emissions.
Clear plastic containers, like thermoform packaging, were the third most common contaminant on residue lines. On top of that, the system flagged over 7 billion flexible films, another recyclable material that often goes unnoticed.
On the positive side, a mere 2.5% of metals ended up heading to landfill and incinerators – a big green tick for the waste stream.

What it means for future UK infrastructure
Waste volumes are increasing, and the pressure to protect natural resources has never been higher.

But ambition needs action. To step up, the UK must improve kerbside collection systems, reduce waste exports, and build infrastructure that can handle a greater range of recyclables.
There’s also a public engagement issue to tackle: 10% of UK residents still don’t recycle, and 80% of those who do regularly throw recyclables into the wrong bin.
Despite the obstacles, AI recycling technology is already transforming how we manage waste. By spotting contaminants in real time, refining sorting systems, and supplying manufacturers with data to improve product design, this tech is helping build a truly circular economy.
