July 18, 2022Large waste management jobs with high volumes of rubbish require the big guns.
These are typically commercial and industrial projects that need to hire the biggest skips available to deal with their waste as efficiently as possible.
At SunSkips, we provide skips of all sizes, from mini containers that are best suited for domestic work all the way up to the biggest skips that need to be rolled on and off a lorry.
But what is the biggest skip you can hire to be certain you’re getting the most value out of your waste management supplier?
Fortunately, SunSkips has got just the thing…
The biggest skip you can hire
For seriously large amounts of waste, the 40-yard skip is the biggest skip you can hire.
In fact, they’re so big that they’re typically reserved for clients that need onsite rubbish disposal, like construction companies and factories, that plan to fill it up over a longer period of time.
This works out as more cost-effective and is better for the environment because it involves less coming and going of lorries.
For projects that expect high volumes of waste, there’s no bigger skip for the job!
How big is it?
At 6.3 metres long, this industrial container is far bigger than the more common eight-yard builder skips you might see placed on public roads and driveways.
In fact, the skip is so big that you might struggle to get local authority approval for a permit to keep it on a public highway.
To help you visualise just how big the skip is, imagine 400 black bin bags in a pile, or 52 standard trailers lined up. That’s what it would take to fill a 40-yard skip’s 30.8 cubic metre volume to the maximum fill line.
Or if it’s more helpful for you to picture it in Christmas trees…

40-yard skips belong to the RoRo size class that requires a specialised vehicle to deliver and collect them.
What does RoRo mean?
RoRo stands for “roll-on/roll-off” and describes skips that are so big they have to be rolled on and off lorries rather than hoisted up on a chain.
This makes big skips like this suitable for heavy waste like construction rubble, whereas skips between 10 yards and 14 yards are exclusively used for lighter, bulkier waste.
SunSkips’ 20-yard skip also falls into the RoRo category.
How do I hire a big skip?
