Most residents are familiar with the rubbish collection services provided by Cambridge City Council. But the local authority actually offers several options for collections:
Kerbside pickup
For day-to-day waste management, Cambridge residents can rely on kerbside collection services.
Cambridge City Council provides separate bins for general waste, dry recycling (including paper, plastics, and cans), and organic waste (such as garden trimmings).
Blue bin: recyclable materials
Black bin: non-recyclable and non-compostable materials
Green bin: food and garden waste
If you find there’s not enough space in your blue bin for all your recycling, you can order another one from the council for free.
Special collection services
For bulky items like furniture or appliances, Cambridge City Council offers special collection services for a fee (maximum nine items per collection).
However, due to the complexity of recycling furniture, many of these items are sent to landfill. Be sure to choose a sustainable waste management provider to ensure your clear-out isn’t harming the environment.
| SunEnviro operates sophisticated screening lines at its sites across East Anglia, so you can rest assured your bulky waste disposal is eco-friendly. Get in touch with our friendly team or book your special collection online. |
Cambridge Household Waste Recycling Centres (HWRCs)
The starting point for a lot of people’s waste disposal in Cambridge is the local Household Waste Recycling Centre.
While visiting HWRCs is often seen as the least convenient option due to the need for appointments, potential queues, and the physical effort of transporting waste, Cambridge’s facilities are equipped to handle a wide range of waste types, including some (but not all) difficult-to-recycle items.
The two HWRCs for Cambridge waste disposal are:
Milton HWRC on Butt Lane
| Season | Days | Opening times |
|---|---|---|
| April to September | Monday to Friday | 9am to 8pm |
| Saturday and Sunday | 9am to 6pm | |
| October to March | Monday to Sunday | 9am to 4pm |
Thriplow HWRC on Gravel Pit Hill (near Duxford)
| Season | Days | Opening times |
| April to September | Seven days a week | 8am to 5pm |

Gates shut 10 minutes before the stated closing time or at dusk if the sun sets earlier.
You may need an e-permit if you’re bringing your waste in a commercial van or trailer longer than 1.5 metres with a capacity of over 570 litres.
There are also recycling points around the city for disposing of batteries, textiles, shoes, cardboard, paper, cans, glass, plastic, plastic bags, small electrical items, and light bulbs.
