September 12, 20225 huge risks of improper waste management
September 21, 2022Skip hire and creativity don’t usually go hand in hand, but that hasn’t stopped a few imaginative types out there blending the two in the most unexpected ways.
From giant Christmas trees to fully functional speedboats, the humble skip seems to stir up the inventive side in people to go far beyond its intended use as a waste receptacle.
Here are some of our favourite alternative uses for skips (including a couple from SunSkips).
Skip swimming pool
Our skips really are versatile – we converted this one into a pool so our staff could cool off! #teesside #teesvalley #skiphire #recycling #construction pic.twitter.com/0KiD6hcvIw

After the recent heatwave, we can’t deny we’ve been tempted to get the hose out, fill up a 20-yard skip and knock out a few backstrokes.
But there was no stopping these lads from Scott Bros in Stockton-on-tees, who powerwashed one of their skips and lined it with plastic for a makeshift swimming pool.
Peter Scott, company director, said, “It certainly beats a hot tub in this kind of weather and for once we don’t mind staff ‘skip-ing’ work for a while to cool down.”
Good one, Peter.
Skip speedboat
A steel container shouldn’t be at the top of the list of things that could easily be converted into a seaworthy vessel, but Daniel Ashville was adamant he could do it.
Inspired by fellow innovators who he’d seen strap a motor onto a skip, aggregate and skip hire business owner Daniel wanted to take things further by altering the front of the skip to be more hydrodynamic.
After a lot of thought and hard work, Daniel set off on his maiden voyage and successfully docked the skip speedboat at Sandwich Marina, London.
Skip library
How on Earth can a skip be converted into a library, you ask? Well, this artistic duo set about answering that very question when they came up with Feelings Library.
Baker & Borowski have been working on the ongoing project Skip Gallery, choosing skips as their medium because they “represent that which we want to jettison, to forget, and so there is a profound irony in the creation of artistic works, housed in a skip.”
In collaboration with Caukin Studio and Self Space, Feelings Library is a pop-up installation in London designed to help people check in with “messy feelings” and “dump” their thoughts.
The library features ten journals curated by professional therapists and invites people to jot down a few thoughts of their own.
Skip Christmas tree
Nothing says Christmas like four skips plonked on top of each other.
Tidysite Skip Services Ltd decked the halls for the festive season with this giant creation, complete with classic star, lights and tinsel.
The structure – which was achieved by stacking green skips in height order, with a mini-skip on top – really brightened up the Stoke-on-Trent site.
Tiny skip house
The Skip Gallery project makes the list again with a skip you could actually live in.
Unless you’re Sesame Street’s Oscar the Grouch, living in a bin isn’t the most attractive prospect. But throw up a few curtains and some hanging baskets and you’ve got yourself a home you can be proud of.
Artists Holly and Faith created A Mend In The Ceiling as part of Skip Gallery’s installation at The Factory E16 in London.
Skip plant pot for a cherry tree
Skips have apparently become so en vogue, they can even be spotted at high-end department store Selfridges.
The Oxford Street installation, by Skip Gallery again, could be enjoyed by passersby in the busy London shopping district.
Chip the skip football challenge
SunSkips donated a 4-yard skip from its Cambridge skip hire site to local youth football club Cottenham United Colts’ tournament as part of a “chip the skip” game.
Participants had fun showing off their football skills by punting the ball from a distance and getting it in the skip.
The skip-based game attracted donations and raised £175 for the club.
Skip ice-cream kiosk
If you thought the skip swimming pool was a cool way to beat the heat, this skip ice cream kiosk will really melt your mind.
The candy-coloured snack shack brought some summer fun to Canary Wharf when the temporary structure – built with one skip stacked upside down on top of another – offered free ice-cream and mental health chats.
Fandangoe Skip – designed by artist Fandangoe Kid in collaboration with Skip Gallery, The Loss Project and Caukin Studio – was such a hit that it’ll soon be heading to New York as part of a BBC documentary about the artist.
Pink skips for Breast Cancer Awareness Month
The SunSkips team decided the most impactful way to help during Breast Cancer Awareness Month was by getting creative with some skips.
Several skips were sprayed pink – the official colour of the annual campaign – to raise a total of £775 for Cancer Research from generous clients.
Mat Stewart, SunSkips managing director, said, “It’s been really well received in the community. Loads of people have stopped to comment on the pink skips.”
While all these creative uses for skips are certainly impressive, you can also use a skip to clear out your domestic, commercial or industrial waste. Get in touch today if we can help you with a good, old fashioned skip for your junk in Cambridgeshire and Suffolk.
