November 12, 2022SunSkips Haverhill celebrated its official opening on Thursday last week (October 27th) with the town’s mayor paying a special visit to cut the ribbon.
Cllr Bruce Davidson attended the site’s inaugural ceremony to mark the launch of the first recycling facility of its kind in Haverhill
SunSkips’ expansion not only means first rate skip hire in Haverhill, but also new jobs for HGV drivers, site operatives and admin – as well as an environmentally friendly solution to the town‘s waste management needs.
Mathew Stewart, SunSkips managing director, gave Cllr Davidson a tour of the site and explained why the modern facility benefits the town.
He said, “It was great to have the mayor with us for the big opening. The event went really well and he was genuinely interested in recycling and what we are doing at SunSkips.”
With efficiency and sustainability at the core of its strategy, SunSkips is excited to be launching a site designed from the ground up to raise the bar for environmentally friendly skip hire.
“While SunSkips has been serving the residents and businesses of Haverhill for some time,” said Mat. “We can’t wait to start recycling from our new base in the town and further reduce emissions by processing the community’s rubbish locally.”
Cllr Davidson became the Mayor of Haverhill in May 2022 and took the post in order to give something back to the town, which has been “very kind” to him.
Born and raised in Bury St Edmunds, Mat feels the same about wanting to make a contribution to the local area and has invested heavily in bringing a higher quality of waste management service to Haverhill: the company’s first yard built from scratch.
“Haverhill is SunSkips’ first completely greenfield recycling site,” explained Mat. “This is, of course, much more expensive, a longer route to market, and a bigger risk than previous acquisitions – but we were prepared to invest the time and effort to deliver it.”
The 43,000 sq ft waste transfer site boasts a 95% concrete yard, which makes it much easier to keep clean and prevent dust from spreading out onto the public roads as vehicles come and go. The firm ground also provides more stability for lorries and skips.
Developer Red Leaf Enviro designed the site to feature a wide bell mouth entrance so lorries can come and go easily, as well as a large concrete pad to better support vehicles bringing heavy skips in.

In accordance with Environment Agency regulations, drainage interceptors stop rainwater washing waste into the sewage system, while stormwater attenuation prevents flooding by slowly releasing excess water.
SunSkips is proud to have added Haverhill to the growing skip hire firm’s locations in East Anglia, which also include Stowmarket and Cambridge.
The company is passionate about sustainability and the team is looking forward to working with the local community in and around Haverhill to build awareness about waste management issues in the area.
