March 9, 2022New SunSkips Cambridge site manager Matthew Jones is on the lookout for site operatives to help drive the waste management business’ continued growth across Cambridgeshire and Suffolk.
The skip hire firm’s newest team member, who is now running the show at SunSkips’ Cottenham site, believes that the company’s success is in most part down to the people, so is appealing for hard workers in the area who don’t mind getting their hands dirty.
“Ultimately, we want to process waste as quickly and efficiently as possible,” explained Matt. “We’re looking for site operatives with a positive attitude and initiative to keep the site running smoothly.”
Matt has joined SunSkips at an exciting time. The Cottenham site was the company’s second location, which opened for business in February last year, but work has already begun on SunSkips Haverhill – set to open in June this year.
All this makes for a very busy period across all sites, but it’s clear that Matt has what it takes to rise to the challenge.
“It’s been a real baptism of fire as there’s so much going on,” confessed Matt. “But the team is great and we’re looking forward to bringing more people on board to offer even higher levels of service and efficient waste management.
“It’s certainly not an easy job, but we’ve got a friendly team here, so on top of the good rates of pay, it’s a great place to work!”
SunSkips site operatives are responsible for manual picking from both the main floor and picking stations, sorting waste streams to recover recyclable materials, all while adhering to stringent health and safety procedures.
Matt’s job as site manager is to oversee the safe operation of the yard, which includes sourcing materials, the upkeep of the machines, managing and training staff, as well as making sure the lorries are all coming and going safely.
“Basically, anything over the weighbridge is my responsibility,” explained Matt succinctly.
And Matt certainly has the experience to handle all that. The 30-year-old started his career in waste management as an operations supervisor at Dunmow Group in Chelmsford, a role he held for six years working closely with the site manager.
“I got a good education in the ins and outs of waste management there and I’m really excited to leverage all that experience to get the SunSkips Cambridge site running like clockwork.”
Originally from Maidstone in Kent, Matt moved to Haverhill with his three young children (all girls under seven) and soon-to-be-wife.
“It’s really all for the kids these days,” said Matt on what he gets up to outside of SunSkips. “I play a bit of seven-aside football on a Thursday night, but I’m mostly looking after the girls, making sure they’re happy and well.
“There’s no partying for me anymore and I don’t get down to see Millwall as often as I’d like, but I’m very happy with the family.”
