July 21, 2023SunSkips’ Ipswich skip hire site is revolutionising its fleet with an exciting new addition of four top-of-the-range lorries.
The new Volvo FL 250 4X2 Rigid 18-tonne skip loaders are powerful machines that make light work of the day-to-day of waste management.
Volvo FLs are designed for agility, making them perfect for navigating the built-up areas SunSkips delivers skips to in the Ipswich area.
Working closely with Volvo Truck and Bus Centre South & East’s Matt Kubot (transport solutions executive) and Jon Warby (fleet solutions manager), SunSkips has brought in a set of truly customised vehicles that are fine tuned for optimal performance and safety.
Safe and sound
Keeping our drivers, site workers, other road users and pedestrians safe is a top priority for everyone at SunSkips.
These new vehicles have been tailored with 3.5m wheelbases for improved turning capability to help manoeuvre around those tricky drop-off spots.
Forward collision warning and advanced emergency brake systems prevent accidents, while the lane departure warning system uses a front-facing camera to track road lane markings and warn the driver if the vehicle strays.
Lower passenger door windows, also known as “city windows”, give SunSkips drivers additional visibility where other delivery drivers face a potentially dangerous blind spot.
Four-way camera systems from ACSS provide even more eyes on the road, and the Halo and Cycle Lane systems from FHOSS Illuminated Safety Solutions shine clear beams around the lorries to highlight danger areas for people to avoid.
The new lorries are not only packing energy-efficient engines, but they’re also fitted with advanced telematics and diagnostic systems that predict when a malfunction is going to occur, massively reducing the occurrences of breakdown and unnecessary repairs.
Hyva skip loader equipment was fitted by Ipswich-based Tip N Lift.

But while the focus was to tailor the new lorries for maximum sustainability and safety, driver comfort hasn’t been overlooked.
Each cab is equipped with air conditioning, heated seats, cruise control and a DAB radio.
‘Truck geek’
SunSkips transport manager Joe Neill, a “truck geek” by his own admission, was thrilled to see the new arrivals roll onto the Ipswich site (formerly run by Cooks Waste Kare) and branded them an investment in fuel efficiency, as well as the safety of the team, customers and the public.
He said, “Upgrading the fleet and decommissioning less efficient vehicles is a testament to SunSkip’s commitment to sustainability and keeping everyone safe.
“The cameras are an incredible aid. Our drivers never have to misjudge a gap when making a difficult drop-off or driving down a narrow road.”
And it’s not just new vehicles that set SunSkips ahead of other skip hire firms, the company is constantly improving its recycling screening technology and onsite machinery, like the new Sennebogen excavators that recently arrived.
MORE: ‘A modern facility to take us into the new era of waste management’
Joe added, “SunSkips isn’t trying to be the cheapest skip hire company in East Anglia, but we do believe we offer the best value for money because we invest in the best vehicles and site equipment
“For customers who care about using a safe and compliant waste management firm, we’re definitely going to tick all those boxes.”
SunSkips is committed to adhering to the highest standards of health and safety while delivering the best skip hire customer service in East Anglia. Interested in becoming a SunSkips driver? Keep an eye out for opportunities on the SunSkips’ careers page.
