May 26, 2025OPINION: Waste tech is advancing, but skip hire is still stuck in the past

Whether it’s a country lane, city backstreet, or private farmland, illegal dumping is scarring our communities in the UK.
For those of us working hard to build a more sustainable, transparent waste industry, the frustration runs deep.
That’s why I welcome the government’s announcement to crack down on waste criminals using drone surveillance and tougher vehicle seizure powers.
In my opinion, these steps are not only justified. They’re long overdue.
The real cost of fly-tipping
Some still view fly-tipping as a minor nuisance, as if it were someone quietly dropping off a bag of rubbish to avoid a tip fee.
But this isn’t a fringe issue. It’s a national disgrace. Fly-tipping today is organised, deliberate, and often driven by illegal waste operators undercutting legitimate businesses.
Waste that isn’t handled properly can end up blocking farm access roads, contaminating water sources, and sometimes, it’s set alight. Plastic, paint, asbestos, and batteries are not harmless when dumped and burned in open fields. It can send toxic fumes into the atmosphere that put people’s health at risk or even cause explosions.
One study published in Nature by the University of Leeds points to the substantial health dangers from burning plastics, including developmental disorders and reproductive harm. The threat is serious—and it’s growing.
It would seem that the risk to community health and safety is something fly-tippers are prepared to risk. So it’s time to give them a reason to dump the practice once and for all.

Drones shift the power dynamic
Fly-tippers operate because they think no one is watching, and that makes it too easy for offenders to act without consequence.
Unless someone catches them in the act, fly-tippers simply vanish. The process of identifying, prosecuting, and punishing them often drags on for months. And for the few that do get caught, the penalties are rarely severe enough to deter them from trying again.
Drones change all that.
These machines deter the kind of unscrupulous waste practices that end up threatening public health, environmental safety, and trust in the system. Local authorities can now gather aerial footage showing vehicles, faces, and the act of dumping waste itself. Rather than there being a long, drawn-out court process, with the use of drones, prosecution will be done and dusted in no time.

The addition of powers to seize and destroy offenders’ vehicles sends a stronger message still: your van is not a shield for committing waste crime; it’s a liability.
Drones hit fly-tippers where it hurts: their tools, their mobility, and their profit margins.
Is the benefit of fly-tipping really worth having your car or van crushed?

Innovation drives sustainability
We can’t keep dealing with waste problems using outdated tools. The scale and complexity of modern waste streams, from construction materials to electronics, requires smarter, faster, more efficient solutions.
That’s why SunEnviro continues to invest in new processes and systems, whether it’s upgrading recycling technology like our new silt press, energy-from-waste, or improving digital reporting for clients.
Using drones to stop fly-tipping is part of the same mission. It’s a visible, immediate deterrent, and a signal that this country is ready to take environmental responsibility seriously.
It’s time to stop thinking of enforcement and innovation as separate conversations. If we want a cleaner UK, we need both. We need data-led decision making. We need real-time monitoring. We need accountability baked into every stage of the waste chain, from the customer to the carrier to the final disposal site.
At SunEnviro, we’ve spent years building trust with both our domestic and commercial clients. Whether we’re hiring out skips, managing demolition sites, or advising on waste compliance, we keep things simple, legal, and transparent.
Every customer receives their waste documentation directly, either by email or via the SunSkips for Business portal. We’ve developed this system to give clients total visibility over their legal obligations. It’s user-friendly, fast, and accessible, so no one has to wonder whether their waste was handled properly.
This isn’t just a matter of ticking boxes. If you can’t prove your waste was disposed of legally, you can be held responsible, even if you paid someone else to take it.
It’s also why we have no sympathy for cowboy operators who skirt the rules and dump waste illegally. They don’t just steal business from legitimate firms. They endanger public health, cost taxpayers millions in clean-up, and poison the very idea of sustainable waste management.

Drones are the beginning of the end for fly-tippers
If you’re still dumping rubbish illegally, the game is up. The risks are growing, the tolerance is shrinking, and the consequences are becoming real.
Is saving a few quid worth losing your van?
Worth the embarrassment of ending up on a drone video?
Worth risking the safety of your own community?
The message is clear: fly-tipping is no longer something you can get away with quietly. Technology is watching. The law is changing. And responsible waste carriers are ready to step up and lead by example.
Let’s use all the tools at our disposal to end this mess.
