June 21, 2024OPINION: Waste needs to be priority for new government
July 5, 2024In the skip hire and waste management industry, efficiency isn’t just a nice-to-have; it’s the backbone of successful operations.
Whether it’s optimising routes to save fuel, streamlining waste collections to reduce costs, or ensuring compliance with environmental regulations, every aspect of the business demands precision – and the right tool to get the job done.
PurGo is the innovative solution SunEnviro chooses to enhance every facet of the group’s waste management – from collection to disposal. We had a chat with Joe Barnes, sales director at VWS Software Solutions, who shed some light on why PurGo works so well for clients like SunEnviro.
A powerful waste management tool born of necessity
PurGo is a next-generation ERP (enterprise resource planning) waste management and recycling software designed by VWS. It’s a comprehensive, modular, and scalable system built from the ground up by industry professionals to manage all aspects of waste collection and management processes. PurGo is intuitive and user-friendly, integrating smoothly with existing business systems to ensure a unified approach to waste collection.
“We’ve got a huge amount of waste management knowledge and experience developed over the years,” explains Joe. “It helps businesses grow, evolve, and adapt; it’s a very customer-focused solution.”
The waste management software market leader is celebrating its 10th anniversary this year, and it’s been a long road to get to where they are today. PurGo was founded by Polish computer science engineer Andy Mirecki, who came to the UK to work in waste management IT. He felt that software solutions applied to waste management at the time left a lot to be desired.
“Andy noticed that many systems were cumbersome and didn’t meet the specific needs of waste management operations,” Joe says. “He envisioned a system that was capable of handling the complexities of the industry.”
Putting faith in his own vision, Andy developed the first version of PurGo in 2012 (under a different company name). PurGo was designed from the ground up to integrate smoothly with weighing solutions, providing a comprehensive approach to managing waste that enhances efficiency and sustainability.

What PurGo does for SunEnviro
In the old days, skip hire companies used paper tickets, which led to errors and a lot of paperwork at the weighbridge.
Joe explained, “When PurGo was first released, it was a game-changer compared to other waste management software available at the time. There’s so much appreciation for what the system can do and how it has been designed based on operational knowledge, which perhaps other solutions haven’t touched on.”
SunSkips drivers use tablets with the PurGo app for real-time updates on jobs, which streamlines everything from job planning to billing and reporting. This integration ensures that all operational data is accurate and accessible, facilitating more effective management and decision-making.
“The PurGo system is very scalable. It doesn’t just deal with operations, but also handles surrounding processes like issue management, vehicle tracking, all in one operational system that businesses rely on,” Joe added.
Here’s a breakdown of how PurGo is revolutionising the waste management process at SunEnviro:
- Smart routing: PurGo optimises collection routes in real-time, reducing fuel consumption and minimising carbon footprints. This feature ensures that trucks are operating at maximum efficiency, leading to significant cost savings and a reduction in environmental impact.
- Real-time tracking: Transparency is key in waste management, and PurGo delivers by providing real-time tracking of waste collection and disposal processes. This enables businesses and municipalities to monitor their waste streams, ensuring compliance with regulations and fostering a culture of accountability.
- Data analytics: At the heart of PurGo is a powerful analytics engine that processes vast amounts of data to generate actionable insights. This helps in identifying trends, optimising resource allocation, and making informed decisions that drive operational excellence.
- Customer engagement: PurGo bridges the gap between waste management companies and their clients through a user-friendly interface that facilitates service requests and feedback. This proactive approach enhances customer satisfaction and promotes a more engaged and informed community.
SunEnviro is set to launch a front-end portal to give customers direct control over their waste management processes. This PurGo integration is designed to be user-friendly, providing clients with easy access to real-time data and operational insights.
PurGo is continually enhanced, with major updates every three months that incorporate new features and improvements based on user feedback and industry trends.
