February 18, 2026Stowmarket might be known for its market town charm, but its approach to recycling is anything but old-fashioned.
Across Stowmarket, residents have access to a well-organised network of recycling services designed to make responsible waste disposal simple and convenient.
Stowmarket recycling services: HWRC
Stowmarket Household Waste Recycling Centre (HWRC) allows residents to drop off a wide range of household waste materials.
On top of that, there are plenty of smaller community recycling points around town for everyday items, so you’re never far from a suitable drop-off spot.
What used to be “the local tip” is now a well-run facility that helps recover and reuse valuable resources instead of letting them go to waste.
To show you how it all works, let’s follow Jackie—a recent arrival in town—on her journey through Stowmarket recycling.
Jackie arrives in Stowmarket
Jackie has just moved to Stowmarket for work. She’s a keen DIY enthusiast with plenty of renovation projects lined up, but she’s also committed to doing things in an environmentally responsible way.
Alongside everyday household waste, she’s expecting plenty of rubble, old furniture, and other bits that don’t fit neatly into her wheelie bins.
Like most people, her first step is to head online to figure out where to take it all.
Stowmarket recycling resources
Jackie’s search leads her straight to the Stowmarket Town Council website, which links directly to Suffolk Recycles—a hub for all the local information she needs. There she finds directions, opening hours, and a detailed list of what she can (and can’t) take to the Stowmarket HWRC.
Location: Old Bury Road, IP14 1JQ (just off the A14, north side of town)
Accepted items include: Glass, textiles, paper, cardboard, wood, metals, garden waste, bricks, rubble, plastics, aerosols, ceramics, appliances, batteries, waste oil, furniture, and electrical items.
Opening times:
- April–September: 9am–5pm
- October–March: 9am–4pm
- Closed Wednesdays
- Thursdays open late until 7pm (May–August)
- Closed Christmas Day, Boxing Day, and New Year’s Day
Booking a visit to Stowmarket HWRC
One thing Jackie notices straight away is that you need to book in advance. This came into effect during the COVID social distancing measures, but many residents said it should be kept to maintain order and a safe recycling site.
The system is straightforward, but trade visitors are limited to two trips a week (but that doesn’t apply to Jackie).
Trade, garden, and DIY waste
Household waste is accepted free of charge, but some types of waste have limits.
- Up to four 25L bags of DIY waste per visit (or the equivalent) are free.
- Larger items are accepted if they’re under 2000mm x 750mm x 750mm.
- Extra loads of DIY waste are chargeable.
DIY waste covers things like hardcore, rubble, soil, ceramics, plasterboard, and tiles. The Suffolk Recycles website lists all current charges (including VAT), so there are no nasty surprises when you arrive.

Stowmarket kerbside collections and re-use
Jackie also checks her kerbside collection days to make the most of her bins at home.
Using the postcode checker online, she finds her weekly schedule in seconds.
She’s also pleasantly surprised by how much she can re-use or donate. Local charity shops will take furniture and appliances, and there’s even a charity re-use shop in Foxhall for larger items.
Every Suffolk HWRC has bright orange re-use containers where you can drop off donations such as furniture, bikes, and small electricals.
Community recycling points in Stowmarket
Not everything requires a trip to the HWRC. Stowmarket also has plenty of smaller recycling points dotted around town, including:
- Shops that take glass, batteries, shoes, and textiles
- Schools collecting newspapers and magazines
- Supermarkets with drop-off points for common packaging
- Extra locations such as car parks, leisure centres, and even the football club
It means if Jackie can’t fit something in her household recycling bin, she’s never short of other options.
What you can and can’t take
Jackie is impressed by the sheer range of items accepted at Stowmarket HWRC. Alongside the usual plastics, paper, and bottles, she discovers she can also recycle:
- Mobile phones
- Printer cartridges
- TVs and monitors
- Gas bottles
- Car batteries
- Old spectacles
On the flip side, there are a few things the HWRC won’t accept, including hazardous or clinical waste, pet waste, paint, tyres, and car parts. To keep things clear, the Suffolk Recycles site has an A–Z search tool so residents know exactly where to take specific items.

Tips for a smooth visit to Stowmarket HWRC
Jackie quickly learns that a little prep goes a long way when using Stowmarket recycling services.
Before you go:
- Book your slot early; centres can get busy.
- Pre-sort your waste into bags or containers.
- Double-check what the site accepts.
- Know the rules on charges for DIY waste
At the centre:
- Arrive prepared so staff can direct you quickly.
- Use the correct containers for each material.
- Ask staff for help if you’re unsure.
- Drop items in the re-use containers where possible.
Jackie’s successful recycling drop-offs
By planning her visits, separating her materials, and checking the rules, Jackie avoids unexpected costs and makes recycling part of her renovation routine. She even spaces out her trips with rubble so she stays within the free allowance.
Stowmarket recycling services are straightforward once you know how to use them—and it’s worth the effort to keep more waste out of landfill.
Mat Stewart, CEO of SunEnviro Group, sums it up, “The recycling services in Stowmarket are excellent, but we’re here to help with sustainable waste management for those with more than they can fit in the back of their car.”
At SunEnviro, we recycle everything collected from our Stowmarket skip hire service – from household waste to rubble, DIY debris, and garden materials. We can even help with waste items that HWRC centres don’t accept. Whether you’re clearing out your loft, renovating a kitchen, or knocking down a garage, we have the right skip size for your project.
