June 4, 2025At SunEnviro, every skip we collect marks the start of a smart, sustainable journey that keeps waste out of landfill.
With more than 120,000 tonnes of waste handled every year across the east of England, we go far beyond simply picking up and disposing of rubbish.
From innovative sorting lines to advanced recovery methods and energy generation, we make sure as little as possible goes to waste and that nothing goes directly to landfill.
Here’s how your waste is given a second life when you choose SunEnviro.
From the moment your skip arrives…
The second a skip rolls into a SunEnviro site, the recycling journey begins.
Large items like furniture and cardboard boxes are removed by hand to get the bulkier materials out of the way.
From there, the remaining mixed waste is loaded onto a powerful conveyor belt, ready to be separated with precision. Advanced vibrating flip-flow screens sift out small waste particles, which can be recovered and reused.
Overband magnets hang over the line, pulling out stray metals like nails and screws.
Then, an air classifier system follows, lifting out lighter materials like plastics and paper to be recycled into new products or prepared for energy recovery.
Every step is about squeezing as much value as possible from the waste stream, ensuring that nothing useful slips through the cracks.
Giving waste a second life
Once sorted, recyclable materials head off to specialised partners to be turned into everything from new metal products to recycled paper goods. Meanwhile, the lighter materials, like certain plastics and residual paper that can’t be easily recycled, are baled and sent for energy recovery.
This means that even when traditional recycling isn’t an option, SunEnviro still finds a way to avoid landfill, using waste as a resource rather than a burden.

What happens to your non-recyclable waste?
Some materials simply can’t be recycled, but that doesn’t mean they go to waste.
Instead, SunEnviro partners with Suffolk’s Blakenham energy-from-waste (EfW) facility to give residual waste a valuable second life.
At the Blakenham plant, waste is combusted at high temperatures in carefully controlled conditions. The heat generated by this process is used to create steam, which powers turbines that generate electricity for thousands of local homes and businesses.
Thanks to advanced filtration systems, emissions are kept within strict environmental limits, ensuring that the energy recovery process is as clean as possible. This way, even the waste that can’t be recycled still plays a role in reducing landfill reliance and supporting the local energy grid.

What’s the story with construction waste?
SunEnviro’s commitment to avoiding landfill doesn’t stop with general household and business waste. Through our sister company SunDemolition, we also manage large volumes of construction and demolition materials.
Instead of sending rubble and soil to landfill, we transport it to our SunAggregates facility in Thetford.
There, the material is meticulously washed, screened, and processed into high-quality recycled aggregates.
These aggregates are then used in local construction projects, helping to reduce the need for virgin materials and promoting a more circular economy in the region.

Why landfill is the last resort
Sending waste to landfill isn’t just wasteful, it’s harmful to the environment.
Landfilled waste generates methane, a potent greenhouse gas, and takes up valuable land that could be better used for nature or communities.
At SunEnviro, we believe waste has value, and that it’s our job to unlock it.
“By investing in the latest recycling technologies, we’re doing more than just managing waste, we’re creating opportunities for reuse and helping the environment,” said Mathew Stewart, managing director of SunEnviro.
“Our focus is on creating real value from waste. Every tonne we recycle reduces landfill pressure, supports local businesses, and contributes to a more sustainable future for the communities we serve.”
