May 16, 2022SunSkips has donated £5,000 to East Anglia charity GeeWizz to majority-fund a special wheelchair for a local teenager with cerebral palsy.
The skip hire company’s donation will help 17-year-old Ruby Bishop continue her dream of becoming a wheelchair tennis champion.
Norfolk youngster Ruby is already well on her way to the Paralympics and is currently ranked in the top five players in the world for girls, as well as the top 85 for women’s singles and doubles.
She has already secured several top awards, including regional winner and national finalist for the Young Person of the Year Award at the LTA Tennis Awards 2022.
And when she’s not perfecting her backhand, Ruby spends her free time campaigning against discrimination in sport and schools for children with disabilities.
The highly specialist wheelchair costs more than £7,000 in total and an online raffle will run from July 4-12 to raise the rest of the funds.
SunSkips managing director Mat Stewart was so moved by Ruby’s story and the work GeeWizz is doing to help her and other underprivileged children in East Anglia, that he felt compelled to get involved.
Mat said, “GeeWizz does so much and it’s really inspiring to see the impact they make in our area – especially in this case, where they identified Ruby’s need for a specialist wheelchair and set about raising the funds to change her life.”
Cerebral palsy affects the way a person moves and inhibits posture and balance due to the way their brain functions. The motor disability affects around 30,000 children in the UK.

Aileen Belsberg, GeeWizz CEO, was over the moon to discover that they’ll be able to put SunSkips’ donation towards the wheelchair Ruby needs to continue her climb to the top.
She said, “We are completely blown away by your hugely generous donation, what an INCREDIBLE email to receive! We are beyond grateful to you for your kindness.”
Based just outside Bury St Edmunds, GeeWizz was founded in 2015 and is already attracting a lot of high-profile attention. ‘Shape of You’ singer Ed Sheeran is also a massive supporter of GeeWizz, having recently donated a customised guitar for auction to raise a whopping £52,765.
SunSkips is excited to continue developing its community outreach to help local causes. Earlier this year, the waste management company sponsored three trees at Bury St Edmunds RUFC to raise funds for the club and do something useful for the environment at the same time.
The East Anglia business – with locations in Stowmarket, Cambridge and soon a Haverhill skip hire site – also donated a 40-yard skip to Suffolk Accident Rescue Service to help them raise £3,000 for their Christmas Treecycling campaign.
Last year, SunSkips offered a free skip to the 2nd Cottenham Scout Group to help them with a much-needed clearout of the hut, and also raised £750 for Cancer Research by spraying some of the usual orange skips pink for the month of October.
SunSkips aims to do more than just provide great customer service to the people of Suffolk and Cambridgeshire and will continue to help shine a light on those in need.
