November 4, 2022SunSkips is proud to work on all kinds of projects across East Anglia, but being part of this incredible transformation in Bury St Edmunds was something extra special.
The new Damson & Wilde restaurant opened in Bury St Edmunds in June this year and has fast become a popular attraction for the Suffolk town.
But the waste removal work involved in renovating the old Café Rouge on Abbeygate Street into the trendy new eatery required a real team effort – from SunSkips’ friendly sales and customer service team to the highly trained drivers.
Tilbrook Construction called SunSkips and explained they needed a Bury St Edmunds skip hire service that could keep up with a steady flow of waste to clear out the previous establishment in time for its stunning makeover.
Between April and June, SunSkips provided more than 10 wait-and-load skips to remove the waste from the old café. And being in the middle of the High Street, SunSkips’ skilled drivers had to work efficiently – and very early in the morning – to make the quick deliveries and collections without causing any disruption to local residents, traffic and commerce.
What is a wait and load skip?
A wait-and-load skip service is a special arrangement whereby the skip lorry driver waits for the skip to be filled, rather than leaving the skip with the client for a set period (SunSkips’ standard hire period is seven days, for example).
This is beneficial for several reasons. Firstly, it gets the waste cleared as soon as possible and there’s no need to have a skip taking up space onsite. For a project like the Damson & Wilde renovation, which required waste removal from a busy High Street location, this was especially practical as not to create unnecessary obstacles for parking.
Secondly, clients don’t need a permit to place a skip on the public highway, saving money on local authority fees for generating the necessary permit, the roughly seven days it takes to issue one, and the headache of filling out all the paperwork (something SunSkips takes care of on behalf of clients, but it’s always better to take no-paperwork option wherever possible for a smoother process). Permits can often be refused for busy High Street locations, so a wait-and-load skip service is sometimes the only way to go.
Thirdly, it eliminates another trip out to collect the skip, saving fuel and emissions (at a time where doing so is more important than ever).
Breathing new life into Bury St Edmunds
With the waste cleared, Tilbrook Construction managing director Tim Baldwin and his team – who specialise in bars, restaurants and hotels – got to work on turning Damson & Wilde into a stylish locale, which serves “small plates, sharing dishes, and delicious drinks.”
When the project was complete, Anita Butters from SunSkips’ commercial sales team joined Tim for drinks and nibbles as a thank you and to celebrate a job well done (she highly recommends the place).

SunSkips managing director Mat Stewart, who was born and raised in Bury St Edmunds, was pleased to have been part of the vibrant High Street revamp.
He said, “Damson & Wilde is a wonderful addition to Bury St Edmunds and we’re so proud of our team for providing such a speedy and convenient wait-and-load skip service.”
